What Are the Different Types of Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry improves the appearance of a smile. If you have teeth that are stained, chipped, misshapen, broken, worn, or misaligned or if teeth have gaps between them, then a smile makeover can provide a more confident grin.

If you feel uncertain or embarrassed by your smile or want whiter, straighter teeth, there is a good chance that you might be a candidate for cosmetic dentistry. Even subtle changes can make a difference.

Not only will a strong smile provide confidence, but it will also improve overall oral hygiene and health. When teeth are straight, it is easier to clean and care for them when flossing and brushing.

Types of cosmetic dentistry

Let us look at a few options:

Teeth whitening

One of the least expensive ways to improve a smile is teeth whitening. Whitening treatments can be an in-office product, such as bleaching at the dentist office. Or, molds and gels can be purchased from the dentist to whiten your teeth at home. Whitening products are also available over the counter at retail stores with rinses and whitening strips.

Dental bonding

This putty-like resin is applied to the tooth with ultraviolet or laser light that hardens the resin. A dentist will then shape, trim and polish the tooth. Bonding is a good choice if you have cracked, shipped or decayed teeth. Dental bonding is also a rather quick service; it usually takes anywhere from 30-60 minutes.

Dental veneers

Veneers are also made with a resin or a custom-made shell of porcelain that covers the front surface of a tooth. Veneers can change the color, shape, size and length of teeth, giving them that "Hollywood" look.

Dental crown

Also known as a “cap,” a crown replaces and fits over an entire damaged or decayed tooth. This cosmetic dentistry option restores strength, appearance, shape and size. A crown also keeps a weak tooth from breaking.

Onlays and inlays

An alternative to crowns is indirect fillings, which are also known as onlays and inlays. These are made from gold, composite materials or porcelain. Filings fill damaged or decayed teeth and preserve healthy teeth.

Dental implants

Are you struggling with the loss of a tooth? Implants can be revolutionary, a chance to regain self-confidence and help return that smile. Implants are titanium replacements inserted in the bone socket of the missing tooth. Matched to look like the natural teeth surrounding it, a dental implant replaces the gap, allowing a seamless, beautiful smile to show through.

Looking fantastic

With so many options for cosmetic dentistry, there is no longer a reason to think that improving your smile is a complicated procedure. After only a few simple visits in most cases, you will be wondering why it took so long for that gorgeous smile to appear!
