When You Should Consider an Endodontics Treatment

Endodontics is a type of general dentistry that deals with disease and injuries that affect the soft tissues inside the tooth. This explains the word endodontic because end means within, and odontic means tooth. The primary function of a dentist is to diagnose tooth pain and perform root canal treatment on diseased teeth to save the tooth.

Most of the time, when a tooth becomes diseased, it's because of a deep cavity, but there are also times when broken or cracked teeth create an entranceway for bacteria to get into the pulp of the tooth. This is usually when endodontics is needed to save a tooth with a root canal, but there are times when endodontic surgery is needed instead. Rarely when a root canal does not completely prevent infection into the jaw, a dentist will need to perform an apicoectomy which removes the tip of the tooth's root. If you are wondering if you need to see a dentist for endodontic treatment, there are three primary signs that to look for.

Throbbing pain

If you are feeling an intense throbbing inside your tooth, it is probably abscessed and in need of a root canal. A tooth abscess is a collection of pus that forms when white blood cells rush in to fight the infection inside the tooth and tissue in the surrounding area dies, forming a pocket for the pus to collect.

An abscess would only form as a result when bacteria has entered the pulp of the tooth, and at this point, a regular dentist cannot fix the problem with a filling. For this reason, you need to see a dentist if you want to keep the tooth.

Pain or tenderness to touching teeth

Even healthy teeth can hurt if enough pressure is applied, but when a tooth is infected, the pain will be intense from hardly any pressure. If you feel pain while chewing any foods that you eat or even from the slightest touch with a toothbrush, then you need to see a dentist as soon as possible. Sometimes people make the mistake of thinking their pain is only temporary, but the pain will only get worse while the infection could spread.

Swelling and drainage of your gums

Suppose you find that there is any swelling around your tooth, and especially if there is any drainage, then you may need to see a dentist right away for a root canal. These symptoms take place because an infection that originally got into the pulp of a tooth has slowly spread to the surrounding gums and even possibly your jawbone. This situation makes it even more crucial to seek professional services because it means the infection is spreading, and you want to stop this before it becomes a bigger problem.

Because of advancements in endodontics technology, a root canal is not nearly as complicated as it used to be. Root canals can often be completed in a single visit, and with more efficient nickel-titanium rotary instruments and new anesthetic techniques, the experience is much easier on the patient.
